She is prob doomed. Thank the city council for helping Walmart get a foothold in your city so they can drive out all the local merchants that have supported the city forever.

Now they can watch the Walmart vacuum cleaner suck your town dry.

In 5 years your friends building won't sell for peanuts because it'll be one of many vacant buildings.

Maybe you think I'm ranting... look at your own statement...'the downtown area is losing stores'.

Case closed.

I wish your friend well. When she goes out of business she can get one of those big paying jobs down at Walmart for minimum wage. Wait she can get upper level management. Oops sorry no she can't. Walmart doesn't like to promote women.

It would probably be tough if not impossible to compete on price.

Unless, she would be willing to also carry consignment clothing - which is perfect for a children's shop. Kids grow out of things before the things wear-out.

If that works out, she might consider adding other consignment sections: sporting goods, toys, etc.

That is going to appeal to the price conscious consumer. But, it may canabalize her new clothing sales.

She could set up some sort of special consignment program for the new clothing purchased from her store... bring it back in for consignment and get an extra 10% on the sale or something like that.

Just some thoughts.
